SMBLF Wants FG to Release Ruga Gazette

Published

on

The attention of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders has been drawn to a statement by the Presidency through Mallam Garuba  Shehu on the contentious issue of Ruga settlements for Fulani herdsmen across the country .

While most of the statement was full of sound fury signifying nothing ,we are particularly interested in two claims in the statement

“It is true that government at the centre has gazetted lands in all states of the federation but because the idea is not to force this programme on anyone, the government has limited the take-off to the dozen states with valid requests. “

We are interested in having the Gazette number and  its content as we know per the Constitution and Laws of the country that all land in each state of the federation is vested in the Governor. In what capacity and with which authority did the Federal Government  gazette land in all states of Nigeria?

This Freudian slip from the Presidency signposts a dangerous sign of deployment of Federal might to overawe the federating units in a desperate bid to promote the interest of one ethnic group over those of over 350 other ethnic nationalities across Nigeria.
The statement also said 12 Governors have  applied to the FG to give land in their states for the take-off of this conquest agenda. We want to know the identities of those Governors from the Presidency as well .

We must say that we find laughable the admonition to State Governors by the Presidency  though we are dealing with an unfolding tragedy .

“We urge states to join the Federal Government at the centre (sic)in encouraging all sides to these conflicts to make efforts towards finding a peaceful resolution. As we seek a permanent solution to these unwanted conflicts, efforts must be made to ensure that no innocent person faces any kind of deprivation or loss of right and freedom under our laws.”

The presidency claims find peaceful resolution to the  Fulani herdsmen terror on farmers (cheekily dubbed farmers-herders conflict) but is only allegedly offering money to the herdsmen and now looking for territories for them all over the country .What have they offered the farmers ?Nothing !

A government that wants to force violent herders on armless communities now talk of no suffering any kind of  “deprivation” and “loss of right of right and freedom”.What better recipe for non-Fulani communities to suffer these than the Ruga recipe?
Lastly ,we hope the Buhari  Presidency knows the message it is sending to other groups in Nigeria with its pampering of marauding  herdsmen:only the violent get it by force .

Tagging Me Rubber Stamp Laughable, Says Lawan

Published

on

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has described insinuations that he would be a rubber stamp to the Executive as “sentimental and laughable”.

Lawan, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Isa, made this known while addressing a group, Women Parliamentarians, led by Senator Joy Emordi on Thursday in Abuja.

He noted that, believing in President Muhammadu Buhari’ s vision and that of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and his personality should not be misconstrued to mean that he is not independent mind.

According to him, “during my campaign, I was called a potential rubber stamp Senate President to the executive; may be because I am close to the President, or because I believe in his cause.

“There is no time that I will ever be a rubber stamp. Yes, I believe in President Buhari as a person and I believe in my party, the APC, but I believe that our problems as Nigerians are Nigerian problems. They are neither APC nor PDP problems, they are Nigerian problems, that require Nigerian solution. So, we have to work together.”

“We will be there for the executive arm of government all the time in moving this country forward .

“We are going to challenge the executive in a manner that is decent but decisive. As a Minister, you have to do your ministerial job well. We will make government appointees to do what is required of them.

“We have to deal with the issues confronting us. It is not going to be easy, but we have to build a relationship that have mutual respect, collaboration and partnership. It is achievable,” Lawan noted.

“We are not here for self serving. We came here with a lot of experiences to impact positively in our country. We are here and we will remain focus to make this government work”.

The Senate President seized the occasion to charged women to be more involved in politics, saying, “the political space in the country is wide enough to accommodate our women, but the ball is in their court to take the advantages”.

In her remarks, Senator Joy Emordi congratulated the Presiding Officers and the leadership of the 9th Senate for what she described as smooth transition, urging them to use their expertise to better the lots of Nigerians.

Emordi said the group was formed to give support where necessary to serving women in the parliament, adding that, “it is our objective to promote cordial relationship between the executive and legislature, and remove the boundaries on women participation in politics for good governance”.
