The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammad Matawalle, has expressed full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, stating that the move is essential for restoring stability amid the state’s prolonged political crisis.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Matawalle urged all political actors to respect the emergency declaration and work towards a peaceful resolution. He emphasized that the decision was necessary to address governance disruptions that have hindered the welfare of Rivers State residents.

“The declaration is a necessary measure to address the ongoing political crisis, which has hindered the delivery of democratic governance and the welfare of the people of Rivers State,” Matawalle stated.

The minister also highlighted the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly as a major contributing factor to the crisis, leaving the state without a functioning legislature for over fourteen months. Citing a recent Supreme Court ruling, he reaffirmed the constitutional necessity of a legislative arm and condemned the actions that led to its destruction.

Matawalle warned against any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public order, stressing that the Nigerian military remains on high alert. “Any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public order will be met with a resolute response from security forces,” he cautioned.

The Minister further expressed concern over reports of vandalism and threats from militant groups, underscoring the need for a unified effort to restore peace. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and the protection of critical infrastructure.

Calling for cooperation, Matawalle urged all stakeholders to use the emergency declaration as an opportunity to rebuild governance and stability. “The state of emergency will pave the way for a peaceful and democratic Rivers State, benefitting all its residents,” he stated.

The declaration has sparked widespread reactions, with opposition figures, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), rejecting the move as unconstitutional. The situation continues to develop as both sides take firm positions on the crisis.
