Adamawa Assembly Denies Implementing Law To Unseat Lamido
The debate surrounding the measure that was passed into law last month by the Adamawa State House of Assembly to create new chiefdoms was resolved on Friday when the House rejected that the law was intended to remove the Lamido of Adamawa from his position as chairman of the traditional council.
Speaking to journalists on the contentious issue, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Musa Mahmud, representing Mayo-belwa constituency, said that those peddling such information were ignorant of the provisions of the new bill passed and signed into law by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.
Reading from the principal bill, he said, “Section 17 states that there shall be Adamawa State council of chiefs with areas of jurisdiction and authority.”
According to Mahmud, Section 18 further states, “the council shall consist of the following members second class chiefs, the permanent secretary ministry of chieftancy affairs as secretary and ALGON chairman as a member.”
Continuing, the lawmaker further notes that Section 18, sub.2 also states, “That the Lamido of Adamawa shall be the chairman of the Adamawa state traditional council.”
Mahmud pointed out that the only new item introduced in the bill was the creation of zonal traditional councils, the North, Central, and the Southern traditional councils.
“It is the zonal traditional councils that the law stipulated that the chairman should be rotational, citing section 29, sub-sec1, the chairman of the zonal traditional councils shall be rotational.”
He urged the people of the state to disregard the fake information being peddled around by merchants of fake news.
