Aiming Flood: Governor Eno orders the Emergency Management Protocol To Be Activated

GOVERNOR Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has directed the activation of the State’s emergency management protocol by the Emergency Management Agency headed by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi in response to the 2024 Annual Flood outlook released by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation.

Eno also directed the Ministry of Environment & Mineral Resources and the State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency to immediately commence aggressive desilting of gutters and flood control channels across the state.

These were contained in a statement yesterday signed by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Ini Ememobong, and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Uyo.

According to the statement, the governor also set up a monitoring committee to propose necessary actions that would mitigate the effect of the impending flood.

The statement reads, “In response to the 2024 Annual Flood outlook released by the Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, wherein 31 states (including Akwa lbomState) have been listed as being under threat of flood, His Excellency, the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has immediately directed the following actions:

“The constitution of a monitoring committee to interface with relevant Federal Government Agencies and propose necessary actions that will mitigate the effect of the impending flood.

“The Committee is Constituted Thus:

Hon Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Commissioner for Health, Comm. for Internal Security and Waterways; Commissioner for Agriculture, Commissioner for Information, Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development and Chairman, Akwa lbom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency.

“The immediate activation of the emergency management protocol of the state by the State Emergency Management Agency headed by Her Excellency, the Deputy Governor, Sen. Akon Eyakenyi.

“The Akwa lbom State Ministry of Environment & Mineral Resources and the Akwa lbom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency should immediately commence the aggressive desilting of gutters and flood control channels across the state.

“These committees are to brief the Governor within the next 48 hours. All citizens are assured of the preparedness of the state government to take all necessary actions to ensure that the effect of the impending flood is greatly minimized”
