Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu on Saturday renamed the State University of Science and Technology, Aliero after the renowned Islamic Scholar, and reformer, Sheikh Abdullahi Fodio.

“This is in order to keep the name for the younger ones,” Dr Idris announced.

He made the historic announcement at the Malam Abdullahi Fodio Annual Public Lecture as part of activities for the Gwandu Emirate International Horse Racing and Cultural Festival.

The announcement underscores the Governor’s commitment to preserving the legacy of prominent historical figures who have significantly contributed to education and societal development.

Sheikh Abdullahi Fodio, a brother and close ally of Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio, was instrumental in the advancement of knowledge, reform, and leadership during his era.

This renaming is expected to inspire students and the academic community to emulate the virtues of scholarship and moral excellence embodied by Sheikh Abdullahi Fodio.

“This is the highest that we have for our late scholar, Mallam Abdullahi Fodiyo.

“Kebbi State Government will Insha Allahu do the needful and ensure that the necessary process is done in this direction.

“This is also to ensure that the name has come to stay, ” the Governor added.

Dr. Idris also pledged that the annual lecture would be sustained by the State Government.

He disclosed, “The state governments will continue to support all the four Emirates to be alive to their responsbilities as per their cultures.

“For Gwandu Emirate, we will sustain this lecture, for Argungu, we will sustain the Argungu Intentional Fishing Festival.

“For Yauri, we will sustain the Annual Boat Regatta and for Zuru, we will sustain Uhola,”the Governor said.

The Kauran Gwandu said he was the happiest person on the epochal day, saying, “this is because of the very imprtant lectures.

Dr Idris said,”This is also because of the invaluable encomiums showered on me , leaders and the good people of Kebbi State.”

Concurring with all what was said, the Governor noted that it would be very difficult now to have three former Governors of any state and the incumbent at one place, at the same time.

He recalled that he had served under Sen. Adamu Aliero, Dr. Saidu Usman Dakingari and Sen. Abubakar Atiku.

Dr Idris said, “All of them know me, I know them and they know what I can do.”

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar 111 , commended Kebbi State for its unique and unified approach to politics, urging Sokoto State to emulate it. He praised the presence of three former Kebbi governors seated alongside the current governor during the Malam Abdullahi Fodio Annual Public Lecture, describing it as a remarkable display of unity beyond political differences.

The Sultan highlighted the event as a symbol of Nigeria’s diversity and unity, with traditional rulers from across the country in attendance. He noted that such gatherings reflect love, tolerance, and mutual respect among Nigerians, regardless of culture, tribe, or religion.

Speaking on leadership, the Sultan advised Nigerians to pray for their leaders instead of criticizing them and emphasized the importance of offering truthful advice. He urged leaders to prioritize justice, fear Allah in their actions, and remember their accountability before the Creator.

“Leadership is about doing the right thing for the good of the people you lead,” the Sultan stated, calling on leaders to uphold justice and serve with integrity.

Former Governors of Kebbi State, Senator Adamu Muhammad Aliero, Dr. Saidu Usman Dakingari, and Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who is also the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, along with several traditional leaders, delivered goodwill messages during the event.
