Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, continues to strengthen the APC fold as top PDP leaders and their supporters defected to the ruling party in Kalgo, Jega, and Aliero Local Government Areas on Thursday.
In Kalgo LGA, Alhaji Umar Namashaya Diggi led hundreds of his followers into the APC. Similarly, in Jega LGA, Alhaji Atiku Bunu, a former Commissioner of Works, defected with thousands of PDP supporters. In Aliero LGA, Alhaji Abubakar Abba Alieru, the younger brother of Senator Muhammadu Adamu Alieru, and former Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Muhammadu Magawata Alieru, joined the APC with a large number of supporters.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors in Jega, Alhaji Atiku Bunu highlighted Governor Idris’ exceptional achievements and commitment to development as reasons for their decision to join the APC.
He also appealed for the reopening of the College of Health Technology, Jega, to avoid disrupting the academic calendar.
Governor Idris responded by instructing the Ministry of Higher Education to reopen the college immediately, stating, “I am committed to ensuring the growth and development of our state, particularly in the education sector.”
During the event, Professor Khalid Suleiman Jega, Chairman of Kebbi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), outlined the governor’s educational initiatives in Jega LGA, including the construction and rehabilitation of classrooms, provision of furniture, boreholes, and fencing of schools.
In Aliero LGA, Alhaji Muhammadu Magawata Alieru, speaking on behalf of the defectors, commended Governor Idris for his dedication to good governance and improving the lives of Kebbi residents.
He assured the governor of their support, stating, “We did not return to APC for personal gain but to contribute to the state’s development under your exemplary leadership.” He also revealed that Senator Muhammadu Adamu Alieru is preparing to join the APC soon.
In recognition of Governor Idris’ contributions to the welfare of persons with disabilities, the Chairman of the Kebbi State Commission for Persons Living with Disability, Alhaji Malami Gwandu, presented him with a Merit Award as a “Pillar of Care for Persons with Disabilities.”
Malami lauded the governor as the first in Northern Nigeria to establish such a commission and appoint its leadership from the community of persons with disabilities.
At all three LGAs, the Kebbi State APC Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kana Zuru, officially presented the defectors to the governor and assured them of equal opportunities within the party. He described their return as “coming back home.”
Governor Idris thanked the defectors for their solidarity and reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing developmental projects across the state.
“Our achievements speak for themselves, and with your support, we will continue to improve the quality of life for the people of Kebbi,” he said.
