Lawmakers’ Verbal Assaults Spark National Outrage
The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria and the National Youth Council of Nigeria recently addressed a disturbing issue involving two members of the Federal House of Representatives.
The incident began when Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, was caught on video verbally assaulting a young Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya. Abuwatseya’s only mistake was asking Ikwechegh to receive a parcel sent via courier.
In a separate video, Aderemi A. Oseni, House Committee Chairman on FERMA, was seen berating Minister of Works, Dave Umahi. Oseni’s outburst was unprofessional and unacceptable, labeling Umahi as incompetent and unfit for office.
The Civil Society Council condemned these actions, stating that such behavior would not be tolerated. They praised Ikwechegh for swiftly apologizing to Abuwatseya and committing to community service initiatives as restitution.
However, the Council demanded that Oseni tender an unreserved apology to Umahi and the Nigerian people. They called on the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to intervene and discipline Oseni.
The Council emphasized that Umahi’s accomplishments as a former governor and current minister should not be disregarded. They expressed support for Umahi, encouraging him to continue serving the nation despite the affront.
The National Civil Society Council and the National Youth Council of Nigeria issued an ultimatum: seven working days for Oseni to apologize and for the House of Representatives to take disciplinary action. If unmet, they would implement their action plan.
This incident highlights the need for accountability and respect among public officials. The Civil Society Council and the National Youth Council of Nigeria remain committed to promoting justice and protecting Nigerian citizens.
The nation belongs to all Nigerians, and no one should be intimidated or belittled. The Council reassured the youth and all honest citizens that their efforts would not go unnoticed.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has a proven track record of infrastructural development and resource management. His appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was a wise decision.
Umahi’s accomplishments as Ebonyi State governor demonstrate his capabilities. The Civil Society Council urged him to continue delivering quality services to Nigerians.
The Council’s stance serves as a reminder that public officials must uphold dignity and respect. The Nigerian people deserve better, and accountability will be enforced.
In conclusion, the National Civil Society Council and the National Youth Council of Nigeria will continue to advocate for justice and protect Nigerian citizens from abuse of power.
