Tinubu Remembers Ogoni Martyrs, Promise Reconciliation

The South-East Development Peace Initiative, or SDPI, known as a non-political and non-governmental organization that has urged Ndigbo to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration rather than starting a national protest movement.

According to the group, the call has become necessary in view of the prevailing socio-economic situation in the country and the attempts by outsiders and other interests to incite the Igbos to join the bandwagon of protests over rising inflation, hunger and general hardship.

The president of the group, Vitus Okechi, who explained why Ndigbo should support Tinubu’s government, said: “Igbos have suffered worse hunger, deprivations and neglect since the end of the civil war in 1970.

“It is disheartening that the same people who folded their arms when the Igbos suffered such untold marginalization are the ones attempting to persuade our people to join the protests against the current federal government. What have these people done to ease the pains suffered by our people since the war?

“What have they done to bring the South-East at par with other regions in the number of component states? What have they done to address the dilapidated federal roads and other infrastructure in Igboland?

‘’Does it matter to them that the five states of the South-East account for only ninety five local government areas whereas other regions have no less than one hundred councils each?”

Okechi, a former commissioner and outgoing local government chairman in Enugu State, admitted that the situation was dire in Nigeria, but insisted that the Tinubu administration needed the support of Nigerians to get the country out of the hard times which did not start with the current regime.

“Let’s be frank, times are hard now. But the best way to get out of the situation is to support the Tinubu administration in its drive to make things better in the long run. The government has rolled out some measures aimed at alleviating the suffering of Nigerians.”
