Windstorm Kills 1, Damages Over 150 Houses In Nasarawa, Taraba

LAFIA: After a rainfall wreaked havoc in the Agbashi community, Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, at least 150 buildings were demolished, and one confirmed death was reported. Several people were hurt as well.

In Takum, Southern Taraba, residents are counting their losses, following a devastating windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall that swept through the town on Tuesday, as property estimated to be worth millions of naira were destroyed.

Confirming the incident in Nasarawa State to journalists, yesterday, Vice Chairman, Doma Local Government Area of the state, John Ari, said the tragedy occurred Tuesday evening, leaving several people homeless.

According to Ari, “It is true that the windstorm destroyed over 150 houses including mosque, school. The incident happened yesterday in the evening.”

Also, acting Chairman, Agbashi Development Association, ADA, Anthony Oshinyeka, who described the incident as unfortunate, said Bassa settlement in Iponu, outskirts of Agbashi was badly affected as a man lost his life while seven others were injured.

Oshinyeka called on the state and Federal governments to urgently intervene to cushion the devastating effect on the distressed people of Agbashi community.

He also solicited immediate release of relief materials and medical aids to the affected communities.

In Taraba, the raging storm tore roofing sheets of residential houses, shops, worship centres as well as electricity poles.

The number of buildings destroyed by the windstorm could not be ascertained at press time.

However, it was gathered from sources in area that unchecked tree felling over the years had stripped the affected communities of vital windbreaks that could have reduced the effect of the storm.

Governor Agbu Kefas of the state has dispatched a government delegation to assess the extent of damage suffered by the residents.
